Sexual Health

Scotland's Sexual Health Information (SSHI) Report

New Publication - 24 November 2009

This is the fifth annual report produced by the Sexual Health Epidemiology Group (SHEG) (previously known as the Sexually Transmitted Infections Epidemiology Advisory Group (STIEAG)) for Scotland. It continues to utilise a number of different data sources to describe a wider picture of sexual health, rather than sexually transmitted infections (STIs) alone.

The aim of the report remains the same - to promote a better understanding of sexual health in Scotland.

The full report offer readers a comprehensive view of sexual health in Scotland and contains updated figures, tables and text for 2008 (with the exception of teenage pregnancy which is for 2007 conceptions).

Annual Sexual Health Reports

An annual STI report has been successfully published by Health Protection Scotland (HPS) and Information Services Division (ISD) for a number of years.

In 2005 HPS and ISD published 'Setting the Scene' a report looking at STIs including HIV in Scotland in 2004. This report was followed up in 2006 with 'Moving Forward'.

Following the publication of 'Moving Forward' it was felt that future reports should have a broader focus and better reflect the increasing numbers of integrated specialist sexual health services in Scotland. A decision was made to add to the STI data and include, for example, information on teenage pregnancies and abortions.

The first of the 'sexual health' reports is the STIOSHI Report (STIs and Other Sexual Health Information) and was published in November 2007. This title was chosen in order to reflect the transition from the STI report to the Sexual Health report so that users would still recognise the report but would also see the change.

The second of the ?sexual health? reports was published in November 2008 and was the first report to use the SSHI title, chosen for its simple yet clear reflection of the continuing broader remit of the report.

The next sexual health report will be published in November 2010.
